Recently, ChargerLAB conducted an in-depth teardown of Apple’s new 140W fast charger and discovered that it uses a custom LLC switching tube from Infineon (marked “60C190D”). Since it was not possible to determine from appearance alone whether this custom chip is a GaN device, we performed a decapsulation (decap) analysis.

Under the microscope, the exposed die clearly revealed front-side source/drain pads and an interdigitated structure—hallmark features of lateral GaN devices. This directly resolved earlier uncertainties and provides physical-level confirmation that Apple’s new 140W charger is indeed a true GaN fast charger.

Apple’s decision to adopt an Infineon GaN device in the new 140W charger at this point in time is likely related to upcoming DoE Level VII requirements, as well as a new round of stricter energy efficiency regulations across various regions. This move likely positions Apple to better meet future regulatory standards.
