PowerPi ITXPower: An Open-Source Project Turning Idle PC Power Supplies into PD 3.1 Fast Chargers

Project Overview

Recently, the PowerPi team officially launched the ITXPower open-source project, introducing an innovative way to convert idle PC power supplies into PD fast chargers. Through key technical breakthroughs, the project gives new life to a massive number of unused PC power supplies. By embracing an open-source collaboration model, PowerPi invites industry partners worldwide to jointly improve the technology ecosystem, injecting fresh momentum into the circular green economy and the wider adoption of fast-charging technologies.

According to statistics, the global installed base of PC power supplies has exceeded 1 billion units. As computers are upgraded and replaced, a large number of these power supplies are left unused, leading to resource waste and increased environmental pressure. ITXPower directly addresses this issue with a clear and efficient technical approach: the ITXPower module boosts the 12V output of a PC power supply to 48V, then uses DC-DC conversion to deliver PD 3.1 high-voltage fast-charging output. This solution is not only technically mature, but also enables the effective reuse of idle resources while significantly reducing the cost for users to obtain high-specification PD chargers.

Notably, ITXPower is deeply aligned with the ITX standard, a mainstream form factor for PC motherboards. Thanks to this compatibility, no specially designed enclosure is required. Users can directly repurpose existing PC cases, or make simple modifications to small-form-factor chassis, to use them as PD charger enclosures. This greatly enhances practicality and convenience, while further lowering the barrier to adoption and modification.

To foster the growth of the project ecosystem, the PowerPi team adheres to an open and shared philosophy, warmly inviting global chip vendors, engineers, enthusiasts, designers, and other contributors to participate. Going forward, PowerPi will officially release PCB dimension documentation and product parameter definitions, and will publish real-time open-source progress updates via the PowerPi official website and major social media platforms, ensuring transparency and efficient collaboration throughout the development process.

The launch of the ITXPower open-source project not only redefines the value of idle PC power supplies, but also establishes an open platform for technical collaboration. As more contributors join in the future, the project is expected to further optimize technical solutions, expand application scenarios, and accelerate innovation and adoption of fast-charging technologies—contributing to green, low-carbon development and technological progress.

For more details about the project, please follow the open-source updates published on the PowerPi official website and social media channels.
