Introduction

In today's industrial landscape, where energy efficiency demands continue to rise, power factor correction (PFC) technology has become a core element of modern power supply design. Fantastichip has introduced the FAN6631 PFC controller, which adopts a multi-mode adaptive architecture to effectively address the technical challenges of traditional PFC circuits, such as efficiency fluctuations across wide load ranges and difficulty in controlling electromagnetic interference (EMI). Combined with an intelligent load-tracking algorithm, it optimizes efficiency across the entire operational range, from light load to full load.

Fantastichip FAN6631

The Fantastichip FAN6631 is a high-performance, highly integrated multi-mode power factor correction (PFC) controller designed specifically for Boost PFC converters. This chip features high efficiency, low total harmonic distortion (THD), and excellent EMI performance, making it an outstanding choice for high-power conversion applications.

The FAN6631 supports three operating modes: Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM), Critical Conduction Mode (CRM), and Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM). CCM mode effectively reduces inductor current peaks, improving the utilization of magnetic components, while DCM mode intelligently adjusts switching frequency based on load variations to optimize efficiency during low-current operation. Within a single AC line cycle, these three modes can adaptively switch, achieving high-efficiency conversion across the entire load range.

This chip integrates an active bridge driver function to reduce rectification losses on the AC input side. It also supports X-Cap discharge functionality, enhancing safety while reducing the number of external components. Additionally, the FAN6631 allows users to configure CCM mode activation thresholds via external resistors to further optimize system efficiency. In terms of EMI performance, the FAN6631 incorporates CCM jitter technology, significantly reducing electromagnetic interference. Furthermore, the chip includes a comprehensive set of protection mechanisms, such as cycle-by-cycle overcurrent protection (OCP), overpower limitation (OLP), undervoltage lockout (UVLO), internal over-temperature protection (OTP), and input/output overvoltage protection (OVP), ensuring stable and safe operation under various conditions.
