Recently, we have reported many GaN component based USB-C Power Delivery and USB-A chargers. GaN (Gallium Nitride) is a relatively new type of material that can be used to manufacture semiconductors. The major advantage of GaN component over traditional Silicon based component is efficiency. In the application of power devices, GaN FET can achieve up to 40% less of power loss while at the same time have 15X smaller footprint. If you want to know more about GaN, watch our interview with Navitas, the major IC provider behind a lot of GaN chargers.

With the help of GaN IC, USB-C and USB-A chargers can be made much smaller. A smartphone charger sized charger can now easily power larger devices like laptops. We are quite excited to see more and more GaN chargers coming to the market and made a list to share with our readers.

Anker PowerPort Atom PD 1
Model: AK-A2017121
Input: 100-240V~1.2A 50-60Hz
Output: 5V3A 9V3A 15V2A 20V1.5A
Dimensons: 41x46x38mm (1.6×1.8×1.5in)
Weight: 62g (2.2oz)

One of the first GaN USB-C charger on the market. It got lots of attention and even won a CES 2019 Innovation Award. We had a hands-on review of its 27W engineering sample.
The retail version is rated at 30W and can charge laptops much faster due to the output increases on 15V and 20V levels. For a size not much larger than the 5W Apple iPhone USB charger, it is really a game changer product.

RAVPower 45W Ultrathin PD Charger
Model: RP-PC104-W
Input: 100V-240V~50/60Hz 1.25A;

Dimensions: 71x53x14mm (2.8×2.1×0.6in)
Weight: 79.5g (2.8oz)

This USB-C charger from RAVPower has a flat design. The prongs are foldable to make it easier to carry. It is extremly thin for 45W output. In addition to the GaN component, it also ultilized planar transformer to achieve this form factor. We will have a teardown report of it posted very soon.

Mu One: World’s Thinnest 45W International Charger

We were suprised by USB-A charger from Mu a couple years ago. The plug part is interchangeable to use in different regions when you travel. The most memorable feature was it has a foldable design to ease the pain of carrying chargers with bulky UK plug. The new USB-C Version has a similar shape design, but much higher output.
We have a sample on our hand, let us know if you want to see in-depth review.

It can be preordered on Indiegogo: Mu One
The USB-A version can be purchased from Amazon, starts at $40.

AUKEY 27W GaN USB-C Power Delivery Charger
Model: PA-Y19
Input: AC 100-240V 50/60Hz
Output: 5V3A 9V3A 12V2.25A 15V1.8A 20V1.35A
Dimensions: 32x36x36mm
Weights: 42g (1.48oz)

A similar product of Anker PowerPort Atom PD1. It’s a bit smaller than already very tiny Anker counterpart and even has foldable prongs to make it more portable. It really hard to decide if the more compact body justify the 3W power output difference.

AUKEY 30W GaN USB-C Power Delivery Charger
Model: PA-Y21
Input: AC 100-240V~0.7A 50/60Hz
Output: 5V3A 9V3A 12V2.5A 15V2A 20V1.5A
Dimensions: 58x44x25mm
Weights: 55g (1.94oz)

My personal favorite. It’s thin and has foldable prongs. The surface finish is premium and feels good in the hand. Even though it is larger than its 27W box design baby brother, the much thinner body makes it easier to fit into a pocket or pouch. The pricing is unknown yet, but we have already obtained one in our hand.

AUKEY Dual-Port USB Wall Charger with GaN Tech 24W
Model: PA-U50
Input: AC 100–240V 50/60Hz
USB Output 1/2: 5V2.4A (Total 4.8A)
Dimensions: 58x44x25mm (2.28×1.73×0.98in)
Weight: 43g (1.52oz)

This is probably the only USB-A charger with GaN component. It has exactly same dimensions as the PA-Y21, but a bit lighter. The two USB-A outputs can charge two devices at same time, so it might be more useful for people who do not need to charge power-hungery devices.

  1. I recently purchased the Innergie 60c USB-C charger, and have been very impressed. It’s incredibly small, and delivers 60w (!), meaning it’s a great replacement for the MacBook Pro chargers. I’m also planning to use it with my HyperJuice power bank, once that arrives. What do you guys think of that charger?

    • It is really compact and has a version with interchangeable plugs. However, there are some controversies. They claim it was the first USB-C charger with GaN component when they were crowd-funding it. Someone took it apart one and found out there was actually no GaN component inside it.

You can use Google Translate to read the explanations.
Innergie told us there are two versions of it, and the GaN version and non-GaN version have identical performance, but we are quite skeptical about it.

We have already got engineering samples of the HyperJuice and AlterPlus 100W powerbanks and the performances are really impressive. However, the build qualities are not. Hope the production units can be better.
